Effective math tutoring requires use of hands-on materials so students can create mental pictures of what math operations actually mean. However, many math tutoring programs do not take the time to effectively lead the student in making the connections between the 3-dimensional representation and the 2-dimensional black-and-white-numbers-on-a-page representation of the concept. I utilize color-coding and strategic language to scaffold (support) the student as these connections are made. The connection is taught directly, systematically, and incrementally in a way that is appropriate for the developmental level of the learner. It is this connection process that makes my math tutoring so unique and effective.
